Wonder Woman Review

Wonder Woman made her silver screen debut in Batman V Superman for a total of 20 minutes of screentime. It was 20 minutes of beautiful screentime that was easily the best part of the whole movie. Finally, she was able to let her light shine in her own movie and boy, it was just fantastic. It definitely wasn’t what I expected. Wonder Woman is so much more than just a superhero movie. Wonder Woman is breaking box office records and director Patty Jenkins is getting the recognition she deserves. She is the first female director to direct and make a superhero movie of this scale.

It is amazing. Not only the movie, but the impact that it has on the world already. It’s shocking, but people are surprised that Wonder Woman is doing so well. She needed to get her time on the big screen, and she got it just when we needed it most. If you need a refresh as to how awesome this movie looked, here’s the trailer.

As always read my spoiler warning before proceeding.

The plot

We all knew that this was going to be about Diana’s origin and how she came to the world. She came into our world extremely naive of what was really going on around her. The war that is happening in the movie is (I believe, correct me if I’m wrong) World War 1. Diana is convinced that Ares, the God of War, is the person responsible for everything so she leaves her home island and goes with Steve (Chris Pine) back to 20th century London.

The characters (or just Diana tbh)

So we can talk about Steven a little bit. He was half of your stereotypical male character for the 20th century: mildly sexist, but not too much. In the end, he ended up seeing that Diana wasn’t crazy and everything she said was true. But now moving on, DIANA THOUGH. She was amazing! She just wanted to stop the war and in the end, she did. She never strayed away from who she was and even grew stronger because of it.

Overall

Before I actually wrap it up, I’m going to be talking briefly about one scene in particular that got me: the No Man’s Land scene. For me, being a filmmaker/editor, it was the editing in this scene that really hit me. Here was a woman who really wanted to just help people and fight, and every single man in that trench was telling her to stand back. But she did it anyway, and she kicked ASS in the process. I feel like that scene was really Diana’s time to shine and that was when she said: “I am here, I mean business, and I am not going anywhere.”

By now you know what I think about the movie. It was amazing. 5/5 stars, I would see it again and I am going to own it on DVD when it releases. I am already dreaming up a cosplay now. She is here, and she is boss.

What did you think of Wonder Woman?! Sound off below!

Haven’t had a chance to see it yet, as it only opens in my local theatre tomorrow. I hope it is as good as the reception is making it out to be as the DC movie Universe has not been massively impressive so far. I really hope it is as good also because it is about time that there was a female led Super Hero film. I am casting my mind back and can only really think of Super Girl in the 80s.

I have now seen this movie. Diana’s character arc was fantastic, with naivete, drama and action that ramps up to an appropriate level. Her allies were good too, looking competent which only served to make her look better (In the original series she was made to look good by making everyone else basically incompetent). And you were right, first world war

She really was the best part of Batman V Superman – and was DEFINITELY the best character in her movie! 🙂 I am SO excited for all the sequels.
