Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

This review may be relatively short because it has been over a week since I saw the movie. But at first glance, I was nervous to see this movie. I had been seeing Facebook reviews from critics who saw it early, and they were saying the movie is a flop. It scored a 27% rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes by critics! I went to see it with a bunch of friends and we all agreed on the same thing: Pirates of the Caribbean 5 was not as bad as the critics were making it out to be. As usual please read my spoiler warning before proceeding on to read!

The Plot/Story

So the plot was pretty good, in my opinion. The only thing is that it had major similarities to On Stranger Tides, where a bunch of ships are looking for the same legendary thing that might not even exist. This time they are all trying to find the Trident of Poseidon, which can break any curse at sea. Henry is trying to find it to get his father’s curse off him, Barbosa is trying to get it just because he wants to be the best, and the dead people are trying to get it to become undead. This is probably why people didn’t like it, because of the plot similarities to the other movies. Carina is also a new female character that is strong and witty and smarter than everybody else on the crew, but naturally, she gets treated like shit.

The characters

Jack Sparrow and Barbosa were themselves like they were in the other movies. Jack’s humor stayed the same consistently throughout all the movie like the other four, so it was nice to have that familiarity. Henry Turner, who is the son of Will and Elizabeth, made me want to punch things. He’s your stereotypical sexist male who kept constantly doubting and putting down Carina. She was the brains behind the whole mission to find the Trident because she was the only one who could read the map.

Overall

I would rate this movie a 4 out of 5. It was a really great movie overall, the plot was pretty good and Jack Sparrow was just himself as always. I can agree with some of the points critics said on the website, like the sexism was vastly not needed and I wanted to punch Henry Turner in the face COUNTLESS TIMES. It may not have been as good as the others but it sure as hell wasn’t a godawful movie (like Suicide Squad).
